Monroe Park Homeless

Eight people arrested for what they said was a protest over the treatment of Richmond’s homeless were fined $25 today for unlawfully remaining in a public park after dark.

The other eight defendants also were charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice for failing to identify themselves to a magistrate. Cheek dismissed all of those charges, saying defendants have the right to remain silent.

The City has released a statement denying a meeting at Dogwood Dell see below, and CBS 6 has edited its story that included information about tonight’s meeting. In fact, WTVR removed Charles Samuels from the story altogether. It previously said, “City Councilman Charles Samuels is holding a 5 pm meeting at the Dogwood Dell in Byrd Park Thursday to discuss the potential impact.”

Karn’s group and some other advocates for the homeless have been objecting to the city’s plan to temporarily close Monroe Park for renovations, saying the work would disrupt feeding programs in the city’s oldest park.

Richmond’s Monroe Park is starting to look a lot more like a campground these days with tents popping up in the city park that is at the heart of the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.

A protest against improvements to Monroe Park. The group there plans to camp out all night until they get word that Monroe Park will stay friendly to Richmond’s homeless population.

The protest features the homeless, sympathetic VCU students, progressives and anarchists concerned with human rights; most particularly, the interruption of the weekly feeding programs in the park for the hungry and homeless. Many believe the park is fine just the way it is, and fear a gentrified park would be mostly for the students who live and go to school around the park.

A group of anarchists and students, objecting to plans to close Monroe Park during renovations, has occupied the southwest corner of the park, and they say they’ll remain there until the city changes its plans -  or until they are arrested.

Twenty-five people, including members of an anarchist group and Virginia Commonwealth University students, are camping out in Monroe Park to support homeless rights and to protest VCU tuition increases.
