A petition to permanently shutdown Have a Nice Day Cafe is on Facebook right now and it’s very active.

 

But some are arguing it’s unfair to single out one business. There’s even another Facebook page that’s been created in support of the club.

Richmond’s mayor and top law-enforcement officials met with members of Shockoe Bottom’s business community Tuesday to discuss efforts to stem violence in the area.

But some business owners questioned police tactics that aim to clamp down on crowds outside nightclubs, complaining that shutting down streets has given the area the appearance of a danger zone, driving customers away and hurting bottom lines.

What provision in the Benjamin-Samuels ordinance will reduce off-site misbehavior?

According to city spokesman Michael Wallace, city officials checked the venue and determined it did not have to apply for a dance hall permit because its dance floor is less than 10% of the total square footage, which is how the ordinance defines a dance hall.

2010 Sep 13. Earlier this year the lives of two young men were cut short by senseless violence outside of Richmond city nightclubs. This tragedy came on the heels of at least a decade of violence associated with the type of act alcohol fuels at parties and nightclubs and dance halls in the city. Almost a year ago the city started a nightclub ordinance and club owners, including the manager of Have a Nice Day Cafe, were hoping to see noticeable changes.

A community leader in Shockoe Bottom is calling for a new approach to controlling crime in the Richmond nightclub district, where a 20-year-old man was shot to death early Saturday outside an emptying club.

After the fatal shooting of Justin R. Morgan outside Have A Nice Day Café on South 18th Street, Napier called for a new philosophy from Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood, who has said publicly that “we’re not going to arrest our way out of the situation.”

2011 Oct 09. Justin R. Morgan, of the 2300 block of Clearfield Street in South Richmond, died Saturday at VCU Medical Center after being shot in the face early that morning in a parking lot outside the Have a Nice Day Café at 11 South 18th St. –Richmond Times-Dispatch
